Gutters are one of those things you don't think about until something goes wrong. They sit up on the roofline, out of sight, quietly filling with leaves, pine needles, seed pods and grit — until they can't do their job anymore.
In northern Melbourne, with the pine trees in suburbs like Epping, Mernda, South Morang and Mill Park, gutters fill up faster than most homeowners expect. Here's how to tell if yours need attention — and why it's worth acting sooner rather than later.
Signs your gutters are blocked
1. Water overflows during rain — not from the downpipe
The clearest sign. If water pours over the edge of the guttering during rain rather than flowing down the downpipe, your gutters are blocked. The overflow point tells you roughly where the blockage is.
2. Plants growing in your gutters
Visible greenery — moss, grass, weeds or small seedlings — growing out of the gutter is a sign of compacted debris that's been there long enough to host plant life. This level of blockage usually means water has been pooling for a season or more.
3. Sagging gutters
Gutters are designed to carry the weight of water flowing through them. When they're packed with saturated debris — which can be surprisingly heavy — the guttering starts to pull away from the fascia. A sagging gutter section is a sign of ongoing overloading.
4. Staining on the fascia or exterior walls
Dirt and tannin stains running down the fascia boards below the guttering indicate water overflowing at that point consistently. Over time, this saturates the fascia timber and causes rot.
5. You can't remember the last time they were cleaned
Gutters in Melbourne — particularly near trees — should be cleaned at least once a year, ideally twice (autumn and spring). If you can't remember when yours were last done, they almost certainly need doing now.
What happens when blocked gutters are left
A lot of homeowners put off gutter cleaning because the problem isn't visible from ground level and the immediate consequence isn't obvious. Here's what actually happens over time:
Fascia and soffit rot
Overflowing water constantly wets the timber fascia boards that the guttering is mounted to. Over months and years, this causes rot that eventually requires the boards to be replaced — a much more expensive job than cleaning the gutters that caused it.
Water ingress into the roof cavity
Gutters that overflow at the back edge — towards the roof — can push water under tiles or into the roof cavity. This is a leading cause of ceiling water damage and mould in Melbourne homes.
Foundation and garden bed damage
When gutters can't carry water away from the house, it dumps at the base of the walls instead of through the downpipes to drainage. This saturates garden beds, can undermine foundations and creates drainage problems that are expensive to fix.
Pest habitat
Damp, decomposing leaf matter in gutters is attractive to mosquitoes (standing water), possums and birds. Blocked gutters in summer are a breeding ground for insects.
Fire risk
In a Victorian summer, dry leaf debris in gutters is a fire risk — embers from a distant fire can ignite dry debris in seconds. This is taken seriously in northern Melbourne suburbs during high fire danger periods.
How often should gutters be cleaned in Melbourne?
For most Melbourne suburban homes, once a year is the minimum — ideally after autumn when most of the leaf fall has happened. Homes near pine trees, eucalypts or other heavy shedding trees should be cleaned twice a year. After a major storm that brings down a lot of debris, an unplanned clean is often worthwhile.
If your property has gutter guards, they still need periodic inspection — guards prevent most debris but fine material can still build up underneath and on top of them.
Can I clean gutters myself?
Technically yes — but working at height on a ladder carries real risk, particularly on single and double-storey homes. We use proper ladders, stabilisers and safe work practices. For most homeowners, the cost of a professional clean is worth it compared to the risk of a fall. It's also faster — most suburban homes take us under two hours.
We service gutters across Epping, Thomastown, Lalor, South Morang, Mill Park, Mernda, Wollert, Doreen, Bundoora, Craigieburn, Mickleham and surrounding areas.
